RESOLUTION HONORING THE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION ON THE EVENT OF THEIR 30TH ANNIVERSARY



RESOLUTION #01-275



WHEREAS, the Youth Development Corporation opened its doors in the Fall of 1971, under the newly formed Model Cities-City Demonstration Agency Program; and



WHEREAS, the Youth Development Corporation was identified primarily as a delinquency prevention program with supplemental funds from Housing, Education and Welfare and the Law Enforcement Administrative Assistance Program; and



WHEREAS, with the phasing out of Model Cities in the winter of 1975, the Youth Development Corporation became an integral part of the newly instituted city program known as the Human Resources Department; and



WHEREAS, over the course of the years, it has provided outreach, mentoring, youth councils and seminars, youth employment, automobile co-op, alliance of youth agencies and food co-op efforts to better serve the citizens of Lansing; and



WHEREAS, in September, 1981, the Youth Development Corporation moved to the Continuing Education Center of the Lansing School District, in a cooperative venture on the part of both organizations, to reach young people in the area; and



WHEREAS, the Youth Development Corporation assists youth with their self-development by providing guidance towards a meaningful self-reliant future; and



WHEREAS, the Youth Development Corporation has assisted over 15,000 residents, primarily from the tri-county area; and



WHEREAS, their Youth Employment Services Program experienced a 97% success rate in 2001, assisting in the placement of youth in jobs within 60 days or less, and their Spartan Friends Mentoring Program has shown that 81% of the participants improved their grade point average by at least one point; and



WHEREAS, on September 21, 2001, the Youth Development Corporation will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby honor the Youth Development Corporation on the event of its 30th Anniversary.



BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board appreciates the positive effect the Youth Development Corporation has had on the youth in the Ingham County area and extends its sincere appreciation to the Board of Directors, Executive Director and staff for their contributions.
