RESOLUTION HONORING JUDGE BEVERLEY NETTLES-NICKERSON



RESOLUTION #01-96



WHEREAS, Judge Beverley Nettles-Nickerson has resided in Michigan her entire life; and



WHEREAS, after graduating from Michigan State University, she went on to receive a Masters Degree in Political Science from Bowling Green State University and a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School; and



WHEREAS, Beverley Nettles-Nickerson clerked for Justice Michael Cavanaugh of the Michigan Supreme Court after graduating from Cooley Law School, and in 1987 served as a legal advisor to the Legislature, then as Assistant Legal Counsel to the Governor of the State of Michigan; and



WHEREAS, in 1990, Governor James Blanchard appointed Beverley Nettles-Nickerson to serve as a Judge for the 54-A District Court in Lansing; and



WHEREAS, in 1992, she successfully retained her seat, making her the first African American female to sit on any judicial bench in the County of Ingham, and in 1998 she was appointed as Chief Judge; and



WHEREAS, Judge Beverley Nettles-Nickerson has also served as a Commissioner for the State Bar of Michigan, President of the Ingham County Bar Association, President of the Women Lawyers Association of Mid-Michigan, and Adjunct Professor for Thomas M. Cooley Law School and Detroit College of Law, Michigan State University; and



WHEREAS, Judge Nettles-Nickerson has devoted countless hours to the community as a member of several committees and volunteer groups, such as the Site Committee for the Ronald McDonald House, NAACP, UNCF, Ingham County/City of Lansing Community Corrections Advisory Board, Fellow Member of the Michigan State Bar Foundation and as a mentor for the Lansing School District.



WHEREAS, on April 6, 2001, Judge Beverley Nettles-Nickerson will be honored at the Lansing Black Lawyers Association Annual Scholarship Dinner.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners join the Lansing Black Lawyers Association in honoring Judge Beverley Nettles-Nickerson for the many accomplishments she has achieved throughout her life and the contributions she has made to the community and the citizens of Ingham County.



BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board extends its best wishes to Judge Nettles-Nickerson and hope for continued success in all of her future endeavors.
