RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE MID-SOUTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE COMMISSION TO APPROPRIATE UNSPENT INGHAM COUNTY PA2 FUNDS TO FULLY SUPPORT THE DARE ACTIVITIES OF THE INGHAM COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

WHEREAS, the Mid South Substance Abuse Commission has supported DARE activities of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office for many years; and
WHEREAS, the Ingham County Board of Commissioners fully supports DARE activities provided by the Sheriff's Office to Ingham County residents, and believes that this program provides valuable service in promoting the prevention of substance abuse to its residents; and
WHEREAS, a request was made to the Mid South Substance Abuse Commission for increased funding to cover the cost of one DARE officer within the Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, the cost of the DARE program within the Sheriff's Office is more than the cost of one DARE Officer; and
WHEREAS, there exists more than a sufficient amount of unspent Ingham County PA2 funds to meet this request.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners requests that the Board of the Mid South Substance Abuse Commission reconsider its decision to deny Ingham County's request to fully fund one DARE Officer in the Ingham County Sheriff's Office at a cost of $68,494, and approve the recommendation of its Executive Committee to provide the recommended amount of funding for 2003, with the understanding that there is no commitment made to continue this level of funding in future years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Chairperson of the Law & Courts Committee is authorized to communicate this request to the Mid South Substance Abuse Commission on behalf of the Ingham County Board of Commissioners.
