RESOLUTION HONORING AMERICA'S 40TH PRESIDENT, RONALD REAGAN,

AND DESIGNATING JUNE 11, 2004 AS A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE



RESOLUTION #04-187



WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States in 1980 and re-elected in a landslide in 1984; and,



WHEREAS, President Reagan restored a sense of optimism, hope and pride in being an American that remains strong and vital today; and



WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision and undaunted determination to cut taxes and reduce the burden of regulations, combined with the policies of his successors, led to an unprecedented boom of economic growth and job creation; and



WHEREAS, America and the free world won the Cold War and tore down the Berlin Wall, freeing millions from Communist oppression, thanks in great measure to President Reagan's commitment to the concept of peace through strength; and



WHEREAS, President Reagan died on Saturday, June 5, 2004, leaving our nation saddened at the loss of a great leader but strengthened by his lifetime of service; and



WHEREAS, Michigan Governor Granholm paid tribute to our former chief of state, saying "President Reagan transformed our nation's psyche with his optimism and positive vision. He was a strong leader who made a lasting mark on our nation's history. He was gentle and kind, and every American can learn from his example;" and



WHEREAS, President Reagan will be accorded the honor of a state funeral to be held at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. on Friday, June 11, 2004.



THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners recognizes and honors the achievements of President Ronald Reagan and joins the nation in mourning the passing of a man who with courage and grace changed our nation and the world.



BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby designates June 11, 2004 as a "Day of Remembrance for President Ronald Reagan."
