RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE
INGHAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE VOLUNTEER MOTORCYCLE UNIT
RESOLUTION #05-149
WHEREAS, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office operates a Volunteer Mounted Unit to assist the Sheriff’s Office to perform in specialized situations; and
WHEREAS, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office has determined that it is desirable to establish a similar Volunteer Motorcycle Unit to also assist the Sheriff’s Office to perform in specialized situations; and
WHEREAS, the volunteers must purchase their motorcycles, uniforms, and approved side arms; and
WHEREAS, policies were established and reviewed by the Corporation Counsel and volunteers must successfully complete a two week motorcycle training school held at Michigan State University and receive instruction through a volunteer academy in areas such as Firearms, Defensive Tactics, Laws of Arrest, and Search and Seizures as provided by the Sheriff’s Office Training Officers; and
WHEREAS, upon completion of the volunteer academy, the individuals will be sworn in as “Special Deputies” of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office as part of the newly established Volunteer Motorcycle Unit and will be supervised by the Sergeant who currently coordinates all other Volunteer Services; and
WHEREAS, the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office is anticipating this unit will reach up to twelve members when it is fully operational; and
WHEREAS, the formation of the Volunteer Motorcycle Unit is a cost effective way to support the Sheriff’s Office and the Ingham County Board of Commissioners objective of “Enhancing public safety”.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners supports the establishment of a Volunteer Motorcycle Unit effective the summer of 2005.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners’ directs this request to be sent to the 911 Advisory Board for their review and recommendation for the expenditure of 911 Funds for the purchase of up to twelve portable radios and related features up to $25,110 for their use in the summer of 2006 when the new the Ingham County Public Safety Radio Communications System Project will be operational.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners authorizes the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office to accept future donations for the Volunteer Motorcycle Unit.
