Diet and Activity

Twenty-eight percent of Ingham County adults are overweight, meaning 20 percent or more over their ideal weight. This is similar to the state as a whole which ranks sixth in the U.S in obesity.

Twenty-five percent of Ingham County residents have high blood cholesterol, and 27 percent have high blood pressure. Obesity, cholesterol and high blood pressure are major contributors to heart disease--the leading killer in our County--which can be reduced by eating a healthy diet and engaging in healthy activities.

However, only 30 percent of County residents eat a diet that is low in fat content. And over 70 percent do not exercise as often as three times per week. Over one quarter get no exercise at all.
