Alcohol

Alcohol is a major factor in approximately half of all homicides, suicides and motor vehicle crashes in Ingham county. Drinking levels in the Capital Area are slightly higher than in the rest of Michigan, which is among the top ten states in the U.S.

Men drink more than women. Men report three times more binge drinking (five or more drinks on one occasion) than women in the Capital Area. Almost 13 percent of Ingham County men are heavy drinkers (more than 60 drinks per month), compared to four percent of women. Seven percent of adults surveyed said they drove after drinking too much at least once in the past 30 days.

Binge and heavy drinking begin early in life. Almost half of those 18-24 binge drink, and 14 percent drink heavily. A proposed goal is to reduce binge drinking to no more than 30 percent and heavy drinking to no more than five percent.
