Smoking is the single most important preventable health risk behavior. Twenty-two percent of adults in Ingham County surveyed in 1996 said they smoke. Approximately, one-third of all households contain a smoker who exposes family members to second-hand smoke. Smoking starts early. About one-in-five adults become smokers before age 20. A proposed goal for the County is to reduce the smoking rate to 15 percent for both adults and youth. This proposed goal is based on the Healthy People 2000 National Goals for behavioral risk reduction.
