Driving Records:
Beginning May 11, 2002, applicants will no longer be required to furnish Secretary of State supplied driving records. Due to technological opportunities, the Ingham County Human Resources office will be able to secure these reports at no cost to the applicant.
Driving records will be checked only for positions that require employees to drive county vehicles as a job function or if in the course of their duties they will transport clients, wards or other persons of the public with county or private vehicles. Driving records will be checked only for those applicants that are selected to be referred to the hiring department. (Only when driving is a required function of the position.)
During the interview process you will be asked to sign an authorization form allowing the Human Resources Office to check your driving record (for employment purposes only). Failure to allow this check of your driving record will suspend your consideration only for the immediate position. Future considerations will not be affected, unless driving records are necessary and you continue to refuse to allow this review.
The processing of an applicant's driving record will be performed by the Human Resources Clerks. The Human Resources Clerks will print the records for all referral candidates. These records will be reviewed and compared to the County Policy by appropriate staff members not involved in the interview and referral process for the immediate position.
If an applicant's driving record does not successfully pass the County's Driving Record Policy (i.e., due to points, accidents, suspensions etc.), his/her application and candidacy will not be continued further in the process.
Questions regarding this updated policy and the availability of this office to secure your record should be addressed to: Ingham County Human Resources, 5303 S. Cedar, Suite 2102, Lansing, MI 48911. 517-887-4328.
DRIVING RECORD POLICY
Description of policy and guideline regarding driving
records for screening use in positions that involve regular use of motorized vehicles as a
job function.
In light of the issue of liability for the county when employees use vehicles (personal or county owned), in the line of their work, on a regular basis or if at any time involving the transport of clients, wards, or residents of the county, then for use in screening for and employment purposes the following shall be used a guide:
POINTS
Points are valid on a driving record for only 3 years (unless involving alcohol related incidents which are held 5 years), then the maximum points a person can have on their record is 4 points in 5 years.
ACCIDENTS
Any person cited for being at fault in 2 or more accidents in the last 5 years shall not be considered further for employment.
Any person involved in 4 or more accidents in the last 5 years, even where the person is not at fault, shall not be considered further for employment.
RESTRICTED/SUSPENDED LICENSES
Furthermore, any person who is or, has been under a restricted driver's license in the last 3 years shall not be considered further for employment.
Finally, any person who has had a revoked or suspended license for reasons that involve the actual operation of a vehicle, or the failure to comply with ordinances and laws governing the operation of a vehicle (non- payment of traffic or parking tickets) over the last 5 years shall not be considered further for employment.
This does not include suspensions of a license due to other State Administrative actions being taken as: Sanctions and/or Fines for events un-related to operating a vehicle. (examples include, but are not limited to: Minor in possession of alcohol- non vehicle related, Non-payment of child support, etc.)
This policy shall only be a consideration in positions where the operation of a motorized vehicle is a duty of the position they are applying for, or is a tool used during the random course of every day employment for business travel during county time or used in the transportation of people and or materials as a duty of employment.
THE ABOVE STATEMENTS ARE NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF ALL AREAS TO BE CONSIDERED, OTHER SITUATIONS MAY APPLY.
