The Victim Advocate Unit was formed in 1993 when Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth recognized a need for assistance to his deputies when responding to a victim at the scene of a crime or serious incident. After volunteers complete a 40 hour training program sponsored by the Michigan Sheriff Association, they may be requested by officers to act as liaisons for victims and their families, who have experienced a traumatic event. Victim Advocates assist affected individuals in finding the resources they need to help them through difficult times by volunteering to:

  • Make phone calls
  • Provide transportation to and from hospitals
  • Issue counseling referrals
  • Offer follow-up support

Members are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week to respond to:

  • Homicides
  • Suicides
  • Fatal traffic accidents
  • Serious personal injury accidents
  • Domestic assaults
  • All other traumatic events
