Michigan 4-H:
100 Years & Growing!

4-H forever growing, learning, caring, exploring . . . the possibilities are endless!

In 4-H, the possibilities are endless! 4-H is continually giving youth opportunities to learn, grow and apply knowledge to “make the best better.” 4-H forever is about young people who care about their clubs, their communities and their world. 4-H forever also describes the caring volunteers who make a long-term difference in the lives of youth. Join a 4-H club today and you can experience the “forever” impacts that 4-H can make!

4-H FACTS

4-H LORE...HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR 4-H FACTS?

The 4-H Pledge

The 4-H Pledge summarizes what 4-H is all about. Four-H has as its goal the four fold development of youth: Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Most 4-H members learn and try to live to the promises they make in the 4-H Pledge.

The Clover

Originally, the symbol of the Boys and Girls Clubs was a three leaf clover with the words Head, Heart and Hands. O.B. Martin, who was directing club work in the South, is credited with suggesting the 4-H’s stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. Early in 1911 the present 4-H design was adopted. Today, the 4-H Emblem is protected by a US Code. The white symbolizes purity and the green represents nature's most common color and is emblematic of youth, life and growth.

4-H AGE POLICY IN EFFECT

On September 1, 2004 all of Michigan 4-H youth development programs adopted a uniform age policy.  4-H age is how old you are on January 1 of the current calendar year.  4-H programs are open to all youth aged 5-19 according to "4-H age."  Five to eight year olds are cloverbuds; to participate in competitive events a youth must be 9-19 years old.  Members and adults aged 19 or older are encouraged to join 4-H as leaders and resource volunteers.
