PWC Service: Lansing, MI

Looking for ways to serve in your community, but don't want to commit to a year?  Check out opportunities below:

Upcoming Events in 2011:

2011 Global Youth Service Day to Engage Youth at Hunter Park GardenHouse

Lansing’s Hunter Park Garden House hosts youth service project to address local issues.

Lansing, MI – On Saturday, April 16 several mid-Michigan organizations will mobilize more than 20 young people from Lansing as volunteers in honor of the 2011 Global Youth Service Day. These youth will participate alongside community volunteers and AmeriCorps members at the Hunter Park Garden House to build and plant two raised garden beds. The beds will be built to accommodate individuals in the community who are unable to do the bending and kneeling gardening often requires. Volunteers will be constructing the beds, designed by Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC), and laying pavers to ensure easier wheel chair mobility and access. Youth volunteers will help determine what to grow, as well as the planting and decoration of the two beds. The project, coordinated by AmeriCorps members, is a collaboration between ANC’s Hunter Park Garden House, the Power of We Consortium, and the NorthWest Initiative. The project will also include volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, ANC’s Youth Service Corps, The Garden Project of The Greater Lansing Food Bank, and the West Lansing Home Depot.

Events of 2010:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The Ingham County Parks hosted a service project in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In the spirit of service and "getting things done" Power of We Consortium AmeriCorps VISTA and State members will remove invasive species and build trails at Lake Lansing Park North on Jan. 17th. Consortium national service members will be working together on projects such as removing Autumn Olive -- an invasive shrub which crowds the tree and shrub lines, harming aesthetics and ecosystem of the park.  Approximately twenty-five volunteers committed to service during either of two shifts: 11:30am to 1:30pm and 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Project Homeless Connect: On Friday, September 24th, VISTA members in partnership with the PWC AmeriCorps State team gathered at the old armory on Washington street in Lansing to volunteer and provide child care during Project Homeless Connect. Clients were able to come in and sign up for services like the Ingham Health Plan, receive services such as dental and medical work and referrals.

4th Annual AmeriCorps Week: Monday, May 10th the Power of We Consortium’s AmeriCorps teams, in partnership with Ingham County Parks, will be clearing invasive species at Lake Lansing Park North from 9:00am to 1:00pm to prevent the spread of non-native plants that threaten the quality of the park’s trails and ecosystem.  Representatives from the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission will attend the workday in support of the program’s efforts to restore and maintain the integrity of our region’s green spaces. Wednesday, May 12th, from 11:30am to 2:30pm, members will picnic on the South Capitol lawn with County Commissioner Brian McGrain, and then disperse for “walkability auditing” in partnership with the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. two food drives are coming up to support the Weekend Survival Kit program run by the Mid-Michigan Food Bank. The kits provide food for youth in need at nine local schools for two breakfasts, two lunches, three dinners and 2-3 snacks per weekend. At five area L&L Food Centers, shoppers can buy some of the “most-needed” items along with their own groceries, and donate the food right at the store. Shoppers can also donate money in increments of $5, which is the average cost of a kit.

On Saturday, January 16th, shoppers can donate at the L&L store on M. L. K. Blvd from 1-5 pm; in Okemos from 11-3 pm; or in Haslett from 11-3 pm. On Tuesday, January 19th, shoppers can donate at the Carriage Hills L&L on Hagadorn; or at the Colonial Village L&L on Mt. Hope.
