The Ingham County Food Bank provides nutritionally balanced emergency food packages to families. In 2000, a total of 17,340 families or 52,516 individuals received emergency food. Of those individuals served, 49 percent were children.. Forty-three percent of the families were working. The Ingham County Food Bank coordinates the efforts of human service agencies and area churches participating in emergency food distribution. In 2000, the Food Bank consisted of 27 emergency food providers that served the working, elderly, disabled, children, public assistance clients, and those with no income by providing them from overnight to six days worth of non-perishable groceries once in a 30-day period. Together, the pantry network provided 945,288 meals during the year. The Ingham County Food Bank distributed $259,100 on emergency food distributed through the pantry network in 2000. This was possible through funds raised by the Greater Lansing Food Bank. The Greater Lansing Food Bank is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that raises funds, food and in-kind contributions for meeting the emergency needs of the greater Lansing Area.
The Food Bank continues to assist the homeless population by providing "homeless packs" or "motel packs". These packs provide food and items such as paper plates and a can opener needed by individuals without a residence. The Food Bank also provides baby formula to clients on an emergency needs basis.
