Our Animals
Wonder what kind of Animals we offer? The Potter Park Zoo is proud to provide detailed descriptions of each of our animals. Check below to see detailed descriptions of all of our current animals!

Wings From Down Under
Wings From Down Under is closed for the season

Potter Park Zoo has a new 'Wings From Down Under' exhibit that opened in spring of 2009. It features over 400 Grass Parakeets, Cockatiels, and Eastern Rosellas in free flight. You may purchase a Seed Stick to feed them if you like. The birds are trained and raised in captivity so they are comfortable and friendly with people and aren't typically shy when it comes to feeding. Come on and join the fun here at Potter Park Zoo!

Backyard Gardens
Strolling through the beautiful gardens near the Bald Eagles and pond can be both relaxing and educational. Several signs along the way tell you how you can make your yard both lovely to look at and beneficial to wildlife in your neighborhood by attracting birds, butterflies, and other animals.

The Barnyard
One of the main attractions for kids at the zoo is our Barnyard and petting zoo. Here you'll find adorable pygmy goats from Africa, saanen goats from Switzerland, yaks, burros, reindeer, toy China pigs, and huge Aldabra tortoises. Take a break from your walk around the zoo as you let the kids feed the goats or pet a pig. It's great fun for one and all!

Bird & Reptile House
The Bird and Reptile house includes dozens of animals ranging from Boas, Emerald Tree Snakes, and Gila Monsters to Macaws, Owls, and the highly endangered Bali Mynah bird.

Only a few dozen Bali Mynah birds (pictured at left) still exist in the world. The Potter Park Zoo is trying to breed a pair of these rare animals so that they one day may recover from the brink of extinction.

Clownfish, Corals & Conservation
Welcome to a world of sunken ships, living reefs, rainbow-colored fish, and amazing scientific discovery, for you have just entered Potter Park Zoo's new Coral Reef Exhibit! Located in the Education Center, our new exhibit is a feast for the eyes and food for thought. Here you'll find many species of exotic fish, shrimp, crustaceans, eels, and living corals.

Our New Education Center
With its opening in 2000, the Exploration and Discovery Center for Education marks a new era in the Potter Park Zoo's educational program. This huge facility includes classrooms, the Safari Room for meetings, a special educational exhibit room for temporary wildlife presentations, and offices for the Society and its volunteers.

Feline/Primate House
Originally built in 1930, the Lion House was renovated in 1989 and became the Feline and Primate Building.

Some of the most remarkable animals at the zoo call this building home, including two Siberian Tigers (also known as Amur Tigers), two species of Lemurs, our beautiful Snow Leopards, African Lions, Mandrills (think of Rafiki from Disney's "The Lion King"), and the highly endangered Cotton Top Tamarin and Golden Lion Tamarin monkeys, which are on loan from the government of Brazil.

Wolf Woods
Visiting Wolf Woods is like taking an adventure to the wild northern woods of the Upper Peninsula or Canada. You'll enter a log cabin that has a large picture window that looks out into our exhibit of endangered Eastern Timber Wolves. Also included in this exhibit are a variety of wildlife artifacts and a video about current conservation efforts that are underway to help protect our dwindling wolf populations.

Duck Pond
Relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of our Duck Pond area at the zoo. Here you can view ducks, geese, swans, and even a few unusual species like a pelican.

And, in a meadow next to the pond, you'll see small herd of deer grazing on the grass. . .

Kids will enjoy feeding the wild birds as you are soothed by the calm waters and see deer grazing in the meadow in the distance.

Pony Rides
Open May 15 through October 18
Our pony rides have closed for the season.  Come for a ride again next spring!

In the summer months the Pony Rides are open for all children who want a tiny taste of the Old West. Rides are $3.00 per child, and you can also have instant photos taken for $5. Kids can't resist climbing into the saddle and riding our adorable ponies!

Camel Rides
Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day
Our Camel Rides have closed for the season

During the summer and early fall, you and the kids can all take a ride on one of our Dromedary Camels. The rides are located across from the aviary exhibit.

Camel rides are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day and cost $4 per ride. Plenty of great photo opportunities for the whole family, and an experience you will never forget!
