ORGANIZATION

The Ingham County Mounted Division is a unique organization of individuals, deputized by the Sheriff, utilizing horses in its primary functions of public relations and law enforcement. The membership, having been sworn by the Sheriff of Ingham County to protect its citizens, further takes on the responsibility of promoting the office of the Sheriff both within the confines of Ingham County and surrounding communities and assisting other law enforcement agencies when requested.

The Mounted Division is a self-supporting unit of the Sheriff’s Office and operates at no cost to the taxpayers of Ingham County. Members must own and maintain both horses and equipment at their expense so as to be a credit to the division and the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office.

REQUIREMENTS

The Deputies of the Mounted Division are required to work a minimum 250 hours per year at the various activities including meetings, scheduled events, training sessions and emergencies.

Throughout a typical year, the Mounted Division Members participate in many different types of activities. These activities include parades in Lansing, East Lansing, Mason, Leslie, Dansville, Holt, and Webberville. The Mounted Division provides security for special events including the Lansing Safety Patrol Picnic, Special Olympics games, and many others. Mounted Officers also ride horse patrol in the city of East Lansing every Friday and Saturday night during the Michigan State University football season. In the summer, the Mounted Division Members assist in providing law enforcement and security services for the Ingham County Fair, the annual Mid-Michigan Steam Engine Association Show and various other festivals and activities.

HISTORY

The Mounted Division was founded in 1953 as a "Posse" under Sheriff Willard P. Barnes to augment his Road Patrol. In 1967, under the direction of Sgt. Ray Rahall, the Posse members also assisted with the jail function of the Department.

The Posse became officially known as the Mounted Division in the early 1980’s.

In 1988, Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth appointed John Causie as Captain and Commander of the Mounted Division.
