RESOLUTION HONORING THOSE INVOLVED IN THE RESTORATION

OF THE STEELE BROTHERS CIVIL WAR CANNON

LOCATED ON THE COURTHOUSE SQ UARE

 

RESOLUTION #08-166

 

WHEREAS,  the Civil War cannon located on the Ingham County Courthouse Square is a Model 1861, 4.2 inch 30 PDR, Army Parrot Rifle, invented by Robert Parker Parrott, who graduated 3rd in the class of 1824 from West Point and was cast at the West Point Foundry in New York in March 1865; and

 

WHEREAS, of the 391 cannons of this type produced between 1861 and 1865, only 198 survive today as many were lost to the scrap metal drives of World War I and World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, this historic cannon is one of 22 that were donated by the U.S. Government to veteran and patriotic organizations across Michigan in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ingham County Courthouse cannon was presented to the Steele Brothers Grand Army of the Republic Post 441 in Mason by the United States in 1900 and dedicated on July 12, 1900; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ingham County Historical Commission undertook a plan for the restoration of the cannon with the guidance and assistance of  Doug Armstrong, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of Michigan, Civil War Memorials Officer; and

 

WHEREAS, Schiffer Mason Contractors of Holt, Michigan provided the necessary equipment and facilities for the restoration of the cannon and base; and

 

WHEREAS, Schiffer Mason Contractors’ employees, Doug Armstrong, Mason and Ed Murray, Mason Tender, provided their expertise and time during the activities relating to the restoration of the cannon; and

 

WHEREAS, the restoration of the cannon has been completed; and

 

WHEREAS, on July 4, 2008 this memorial will be rededicated to those who served in the Civil War.

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners formally recognizes the efforts of those involved in assuring that this monument will continue to remain for future generations of Ingham County residents to enjoy and recall the history which it represents.
